WTA Toronto 2026 Roundup | Day 5
The third round began Thursday at the National Bank Open, and the Toronto field started getting considerably smaller.
Aryna Sabalenka, Iga Swiatek and Jessica Pegula all moved safely into the Round of 16, while Madison Keys became one of the day’s biggest names to exit.
Elsewhere, Alex Eala returned to Centre Court—but this time alongside a rather famous doubles partner.
Kostyuk Knocks Out Madison Keys
Marta Kostyuk def. Madison Keys — 6–3, 6–1
Madison Keys’ Toronto campaign came to an abrupt end against Marta Kostyuk.
Keys had cruised through her opening match against Antonia Ruzic, dropping only three games, but Kostyuk presented an entirely different challenge.
The Ukrainian took control of the match and never allowed Keys to establish the aggressive rhythm that makes her so dangerous, completing a convincing 6–3, 6–1 victory.
Kostyuk moves into the Round of 16, while Keys’ Toronto run ends after two matches.

Pegula Cruises Into the Round of 16
Jessica Pegula def. Kamilla Rakhimova — 6–4, 6–0
Jessica Pegula continued putting the disappointment of Washington behind her.
After needing three sets to get through Magdalena Frech in her Toronto opener, Pegula produced a much more commanding performance against Kamilla Rakhimova.
The opening set remained competitive, but once Pegula took it 6–4, the match quickly moved in one direction.
She swept through the second set 6–0 to secure her place in the last 16.

Swiatek Makes Quick Work of Golubic
Iga Swiatek def. Viktorija Golubic — 6–2, 6–1
Iga Swiatek’s impressive start continued with another emphatic straight-sets victory.
After dropping only three games against Sara Bejlek in her opening match, Swiatek surrendered just three more against Viktorija Golubic.
A 6–2, 6–1 victory sends her comfortably into the Round of 16, where the competition will begin getting considerably tougher.

Sabalenka Handles Zhang
Aryna Sabalenka def. Zhang Shuai — 6–3, 6–4
Top seed Aryna Sabalenka also avoided trouble.
Zhang Shuai had produced an impressive run into the third round, but Sabalenka proved too strong in the important moments and completed a 6–3, 6–4 victory.
Like Swiatek, Sabalenka has reached the last 16 without dropping a set.

Shnaider Continues Her Run
Diana Shnaider def. Anna Kalinskaya — 6–3, 6–3
Diana Shnaider quietly continued building momentum with a straight-sets victory over Anna Kalinskaya.
Shnaider won 6–3, 6–3 to advance to the Round of 16—where Jessica Pegula awaits.
That match up should provide a much clearer indication of how dangerous Shnaider can be in the second week.
Svitolina Dominates Potapova
Elina Svitolina def. Anastasia Potapova — 6–1, 6–1
After surviving a marathon opening match against Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, Elina Svitolina had a dramatically easier afternoon in Round 3.
Svitolina dropped only two games against Anastasia Potapova, winning 6–1, 6–1 to move into the last 16.
Eala and Venus Williams Team Up in Doubles
Miyu Kato / Liudmila Samsonova def. Alexandra Eala / Venus Williams — 6–4, 6–3
Alexandra Eala returned to the court alongside seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams in the Toronto doubles draw.
The pair couldn’t get past Miyu Kato and Liudmila Samsonova, falling in straight sets, but their partnership added another attraction for the Toronto crowd.
Eala and Williams were already familiar partners, having previously teamed up during the 2026 season.

Friday Brings Eala, Fernandez, Andreeva and Korneeva
The second half of Round 3 takes place Friday, and several players we’ve been following will be involved.
Alex Eala faces Caty McNally, with a place in the Round of 16 at stake.
Leylah Fernandez faces Mirra Andreeva, putting two players from our watchlist directly against one another.
And qualifier Alina Korneeva faces Iva Jovic, giving the young Russian another opportunity to extend what has already been an impressive Toronto run.
By the end of Friday, the entire Round of 16 will be set.
