Ningbo Open 2026 Day 1

Ningbo Open 2026 Day 1 Roundup: Alex Eala Clears the First Obstacle

The Ningbo Open 2026 Day 1 delivered the first answers to the questions raised before the tournament. Alex Eala ended her WTA Tour losing streak with a convincing victory over Diane Parry, Leylah Fernandez overturned a deciding-set deficit to eliminate a seeded opponent, and former champion Daria Kasatkina made an early exit.

But not every storyline was settled on the court.

Maja Chwalińska withdrew before playing her opening match, ending one of the tournament’s most intriguing developing stories before it could begin.

Five women’s singles matches were completed on Monday, October 19. Together, they provided the first real test of Tennis Roundup’s eight pre-tournament Story Seeds.

Alex Eala Clears the First Obstacle in Ningbo

Alex Eala def. Diane Parry 6–3, 6–1

Before the draw, we called it Alex Eala’s Redemption Road.

The Filipina arrived in Ningbo seeking to end a three-match losing streak on the WTA Tour. Her recent defeats had come against Iva Jovic at the US Open, Tatiana Prozorova in Singapore and Han Shi in Wuhan.

Those losses did not tell her entire recent story. Eala had also competed successfully at the Asian Games, where she earned a bronze medal.

Still, Ningbo presented another opportunity to restore momentum on the WTA Tour.

When the draw placed France’s Diane Parry across the net, the first obstacle was established.

    On Monday, Eala cleared it.

The 21-year-old defeated Parry in 1 hour and 17 minutes, winning 6–3, 6–1 to advance to the second round.

Seven Games That Changed the Match

The opening set was level at 3–3 before Eala seized control.

She won seven consecutive games, taking the first set 6–3 and building a 4–0 lead in the second.

That sequence transformed a competitive opening into a commanding advantage.

Parry briefly interrupted the run, but Eala completed the victory without allowing the match to develop into another extended battle.

The result was particularly significant because of the pattern of Eala’s recent WTA Tour defeats. In Singapore and Wuhan, she had won the opening set before eventually losing.

Against Parry, she established an advantage and sustained it.

One victory cannot establish that every competitive problem has been solved. But this time, Eala finished the job.

    Watch Eala vs Parry highlights:

    The Redemption Road Continues

Eala’s next opponent will be determined by the first-round meeting between No. 6 seed Diana Shnaider and qualifier Yulia Putintseva.

A Shnaider victory would produce a first WTA meeting between the two left-handers.

Further along the draw, a potential quarterfinal against Iva Jovic remains possible. Jovic defeated Eala three times during 2026, including their three-set US Open encounter.

But those possibilities depend on results still to come.

For now, Eala has accomplished the immediate task.

The first obstacle is behind her. The Redemption Road remains open.

Ningbo Open 2026 Day 1: Leylah Fernandez Produces the Comeback

    Leylah Fernandez def. Elise Mertens [7] 2–6, 6–3, 7–5

If Eala supplied the day’s central storyline, Leylah Fernandez delivered its most dramatic match.

The Canadian recovered from losing the opening set against seventh seed Elise Mertens before taking the second to force a decider.

Even then, Fernandez’s position remained precarious.

Mertens led 5–3 in the final set, putting herself within reach of the second round.

Fernandez refused to let the match end there.

She fought back to take the deciding set 7–5, completing a victory after 2 hours and 49 minutes.

The result eliminated one of Ningbo’s eight seeds on the opening day and introduced a new storyline into the tournament.

Fernandez now faces qualifier Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the Round of 16.

One player survived the day’s longest documented battle. The other eliminated a former Ningbo champion.

Their meeting is no longer hypothetical.

It is one of the confirmed second-round contests to watch.

Sorana Cîrstea Stops Han Shi’s Qualifying Momentum

    Sorana Cîrstea [8] def. Han Shi [Q] 6–3, 6–2

Han Shi entered Ningbo carrying momentum from two notable victories.

At Wuhan, the Chinese player had defeated Alex Eala in three sets.

During Ningbo qualifying, she overcame Alina Korneeva 7–6(4), 6–0 to secure her place in the main draw.

That sequence made Shi an emerging player worth following.

But eighth seed Sorana Cîrstea ended her Ningbo campaign with a 6–3, 6–2 victory.

Cîrstea advances to face the winner of Sara Bejlek and lucky loser Alycia Parks.

For Shi, the defeat ends this tournament run, although her recent performances remain relevant to the broader story of emerging players challenging established names.

    Watch Cirstea vs Shi highlights:

Daria Kasatkina’s Return Ends Against Aliaksandra Sasnovich

Aliaksandra Sasnovich [Q] def. Daria Kasatkina [WC] 6–4, 6–2

Daria Kasatkina returned to Ningbo as a former champion, having won the tournament in 2024.

But her latest campaign ended at the first hurdle.

Qualifier Aliaksandra Sasnovich defeated the wildcard entrant in straight sets, 6–4, 6–2.

For Kasatkina, the result closed a storyline that Tennis Roundup had identified before the tournament: could a former champion rediscover success at a familiar event?

The answer in 2026 was immediate.

For Sasnovich, however, the victory opened a different opportunity.

After earning her place through qualifying, she has now advanced into the main draw’s second round, where Fernandez awaits.

The original Kasatkina story has ended.

A new Fernandez–Sasnovich chapter has begun.

Marie Bouzková Earns an Iga Świątek Test

Marie Bouzková def. Kamilla Rakhimova [Q] 6–4, 6–4

Marie Bouzková completed the day’s fifth singles result, defeating qualifier Kamilla Rakhimova in two closely scored sets.

Her reward is a second-round meeting with No. 2 seed Iga Świątek.

Świątek received a first-round bye as one of Ningbo’s top four seeds.

Bouzková, meanwhile, has already played and won a main-draw match.

Their meeting will provide Świątek’s first competitive test of the tournament.

Developing Storylines: When the Draw Changes the Story

Not every pre-tournament question survives until the first ball is struck.

Two withdrawals have significantly altered the Ningbo field.

Maja Chwalińska Withdraws Before Her Opening Match

Maja Chwalińska, whose recent Wuhan performances had made her one of Tennis Roundup’s developing storylines, withdrew from Ningbo with a left-thigh injury.

Her place was taken by lucky loser Daria Snigur, who will face qualifier Katarzyna Kawa.

Chwalińska’s withdrawal closes the possibility of extending that particular storyline at Ningbo.

It is not a match defeat, and it does not erase what she achieved before arriving.

It simply means the next chapter will have to wait.

    Wang Xiyu Also Withdraws

Chinese wildcard Wang Xiyu withdrew because of illness.

Lucky loser Alycia Parks entered the draw in her place and will face Sara Bejlek.

The change also affects the section containing eighth seed Cîrstea.
