Cincinnati Open 2026 Roundup | Day 4

The 2026 Cincinnati Open completed its second round on Sunday, August 16, with many of the tournament’s biggest names finally taking the court in Mason, Ohio.

Coco Gauff recovered from a set down, Aryna Sabalenka survived a second-set challenge, Iga Swiatek and Mirra Andreeva cruised through, while Elena Rybakina made a successful start just days after reaching the Toronto final.

Elsewhere, Leylah Fernandez was eliminated by Xiyu Wang, while Madison Keys and Elina Svitolina needed three sets to secure their places in the Round of 32.

Gauff Turns It Around Against Samsonova

Coco Gauff had one of the more difficult starts among the leading seeds, coming from behind to defeat Liudmila Samsonova 2-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Samsonova controlled the opening set and put the No. 4 seed under immediate pressure.

Gauff responded by grinding out the second set before taking complete control of the decider, dropping only one game.

The comeback keeps the 2023 Cincinnati champion in contention and sends her into the third round against Ann Li.

Sabalenka Survives Gibson Challenge

World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka opened her Cincinnati campaign with a 6-2, 7-6(2) victory over Talia Gibson.

The first set suggested a straightforward start for the top seed, but Gibson made the second considerably more competitive and forced a tiebreak.

Sabalenka then took command, winning the breaker 7-2 to avoid being dragged into a deciding set.

She moves on to face Xinyu Wang.

Swiatek Cruises After Toronto Triumph

Defending Cincinnati champion Iga Swiatek showed few signs of fatigue following her title run in Toronto.

Swiatek defeated Emiliana Arango 6-3, 6-0, winning the final nine games of the match to move comfortably into the third round.

The victory came only days after Swiatek defeated Elena Rybakina in the Toronto final.

She will next face Maria Sakkari as she continues her Cincinnati title defense.

Andreeva Drops Just One Game

Mirra Andreeva produced perhaps the most dominant women’s performance of Day 4.

The No. 5 seed overwhelmed Oleksandra Oliynykova 6-1, 6-0, conceding only one game in her opening Cincinnati match.

Andreeva never allowed the match to develop into a contest and moves into the third round against Janice Tjen.

Rybakina Makes Winning Start

Elena Rybakina also advanced in straight sets, defeating Taylor Townsend 6-3, 6-4.

Rybakina arrived in Cincinnati after reaching the Toronto final, where she lost to Swiatek.

Despite the quick turnaround between the two WTA 1000 events, the No. 2 seed avoided an extended opening match and secured her place in the Round of 32.

She will next face Magdalena Frech, who eliminated Jelena Ostapenko on Day 3.

Keys Recovers From Slow Start

Madison Keys had to come from behind against Daria Snigur.

Snigur took the opening set 6-4 before Keys responded, eventually completing a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory.

The former Cincinnati champion now moves into the third round against Katerina Siniakova.

Fernandez Falls to Xiyu Wang

Leylah Fernandez’s Cincinnati campaign ended in the second round after Xiyu Wang recovered from a set down to win 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.

Fernandez made the stronger start, taking the opening set 6-3.

But the match changed dramatically from there.

Wang conceded only four games across the final two sets to complete the comeback and advance into the Round of 32.

Svitolina Survives Valentova Test

Elina Svitolina was pushed all the way by Tereza Valentova before advancing 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-0.

Valentova took the opening set and came close to completing the upset in the second.

Svitolina survived the tiebreak and then took complete control, winning the deciding set without dropping a game.

She will next meet Xiyu Wang.

Kostyuk Edges Kenin

Marta Kostyuk survived another of Day 4’s three-set battles, defeating former Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.

Kenin took the opening set, but Kostyuk fought back and eventually edged a tight decider.

Her reward is a third-round meeting with Sloane Stephens, who defeated Anastasia Potapova 6-2, 6-4.

Bejlek Claims Another Big Win

Sara Bejlek continued an impressive Cincinnati run by defeating Barbora Krejcikova 7-6(5), 6-4.

Bejlek had already overwhelmed former Cincinnati champion Karolina Pliskova 6-0, 6-2 in the opening round.

Now she has added another major champion to her list of Cincinnati victories.

She advances to face Ekaterina Alexandrova in the third round.

Tjen Keeps Her Run Going

Janice Tjen survived a marathon against Viktorija Golubic, winning 7-6(8), 5-7, 7-5.

Her reward could hardly be more challenging.

Tjen will face Mirra Andreeva next after the fifth seed’s dominant opening performance.

Doubles Enters the Cincinnati Picture

The women’s doubles competition is now entering the Cincinnati schedule, adding another layer to the tournament as singles reaches the third round.

The 32-team draw will be covered alongside singles from this point forward, with particular attention to significant results, leading teams and notable partnerships as they enter the competition.

Day 5: Eala vs. Anisimova Takes Center Stage

Monday, August 17 moves Cincinnati into the third round, and one of the day’s most intriguing matches is:

Alexandra Eala vs. Amanda Anisimova.

It will be their first career meeting.

Eala advanced after Elena-Gabriela Ruse retired in their second-round match, while Anisimova defeated Zeynep Sonmez 6-2, 6-3.

Elsewhere, Jessica Pegula faces Emma Navarro, Elena Rybakina meets Magdalena Frech, and defending champion Iga Swiatek takes on Maria Sakkari.

Linda Noskova faces Clara Tauson, while Diana Shnaider meets Maja Chwalinska.

After four days of building the draw, Cincinnati is moving into the stage where contenders begin running directly into one another.

And for Eala, another major test is waiting.
