The 2026 Cincinnati Open delivered its biggest upset yet on Wednesday, August 19, as the women’s singles field was reduced from 16 players to eight.

Sara Bejlek stunned World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets to reach her first WTA 1000 quarterfinal, Amanda Anisimova continued her strong run, Jessica Pegula survived a three-set battle, and Coco Gauff, Iga Swiatek and Elena Rybakina all advanced.

Marta Kostyuk also came from behind to eliminate Mirra Andreeva, while Madison Keys completed the quarterfinal lineup.

But Day 7 belonged to Bejlek.

Bejlek Stuns World No. 1 Sabalenka

What began as an impressive Cincinnati run has turned into a genuine breakthrough for Sara Bejlek.

The 20-year-old Czech defeated World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka 7-6(7), 6-4, recording the biggest victory of her career and reaching her first WTA 1000 quarterfinal.

Bejlek had already made herself one of the stories of the tournament before facing Sabalenka.

She opened Cincinnati by overwhelming former World No. 1 and 2016 champion Karolina Pliskova 6-0, 6-2.

Next came Grand Slam champion Barbora Krejcikova, whom Bejlek defeated 7-6(5), 6-4.

Then she recovered from a set down to eliminate No. 16 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.

Sabalenka represented an entirely different level of challenge.

Bejlek answered it.

Bejlek Holds Her Nerve in Opening-Set Battle

The opening set gave an indication that Sabalenka would not have an easy night.

Neither player could establish enough separation to take control, eventually sending the set into a tiebreak.

Bejlek refused to be overwhelmed by the occasion or by the power coming from the other side of the net.

The Czech eventually edged the breaker 9-7, putting the World No. 1 a set away from elimination.

Sabalenka had entered the match after conceding only four games against Xinyu Wang in the previous round.

Against Bejlek, she could not produce the same control.

Bejlek Finishes the Upset in Straight Sets

Taking one set from the World No. 1 was one thing.

Finishing the job was another.

Bejlek did exactly that.

She took the second set 6-4, completing the biggest upset of the women’s tournament and recording her first career victory over a Top-10 opponent.

The result sends Bejlek into the quarterfinals of a WTA 1000 event for the first time.

Her Cincinnati path now reads:

Keys Sets Up Bejlek Quarterfinal

Madison Keys booked her place in the quarterfinals with a 7-6(3), 6-4 victory over Xiyu Wang.

Wang had advanced to the Round of 16 after Elina Svitolina withdrew with an ankle injury.

Keys faced considerably more resistance in the opening set than the straight-sets scoreline might suggest, eventually taking it through a tiebreak.

She then closed out the second 6-4.

That sets up:

Sara Bejlek vs. Madison Keys

for a place in the Cincinnati semifinals.

After what Bejlek has already accomplished this week, it would be difficult to call anything impossible.

Anisimova Cruises Past Noskova

Amanda Anisimova continued her Cincinnati run with a commanding 6-1, 6-4 victory over Linda Noskova.

Anisimova had needed three sets to get past Alexandra Eala in the previous round, but there was little sign of similar trouble in the opening set against the No. 6 seed.

She raced through it 6-1.

Noskova made the second more competitive, but Anisimova prevented the match from extending into a decider and closed it out 6-4.

The American is now into the quarterfinals, where another American awaits.

Pegula Survives Cirstea Battle

Jessica Pegula needed three sets to defeat Sorana Cirstea 6-2, 4-6, 7-5.

Pegula appeared to be heading toward another comfortable Cincinnati victory after taking the opening set 6-2.

Cirstea changed the match by winning the second 6-4 and pushed the No. 3 seed deep into the deciding set.

Pegula eventually found the breakthrough and closed out the match 7-5.

Her reward is an all-American quarterfinal against Amanda Anisimova.

Swiatek Continues Title Defense

Defending champion Iga Swiatek defeated Diane Parry 6-3, 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals.

After needing three sets against Maria Sakkari in the previous round, Swiatek returned to straight-sets territory.

The No. 7 seed controlled both sets by identical margins and remains firmly in contention to defend her Cincinnati title.

Her next opponent provides one of the biggest quarterfinal matchups of the tournament.

Rybakina Sets Up Swiatek Rematch

Elena Rybakina defeated Diana Shnaider 6-4, 6-4 to continue another deep WTA 1000 run.

The No. 2 seed has yet to drop a set in Cincinnati.

Her reward:

Elena Rybakina vs. Iga Swiatek.

The matchup comes shortly after the two met in the Toronto final, where Swiatek defeated Rybakina for the title.

Cincinnati now provides an immediate rematch — this time with a semifinal place at stake.

Gauff Powers Past Bouzkova

Coco Gauff produced another strong performance, defeating Marie Bouzkova 6-3, 6-2.

After needing three sets in her opening Cincinnati match, Gauff has become increasingly convincing as the tournament has progressed.

She defeated Ann Li in straight sets in the previous round and again avoided a decider against Bouzkova.

Gauff moves into the quarterfinals against Marta Kostyuk.

Kostyuk Turns Match Around Against Andreeva

Marta Kostyuk produced one of the day’s other notable results, coming from behind to defeat Mirra Andreeva 4-6, 6-0, 6-2.

Andreeva entered the match without having dropped a set in Cincinnati and appeared in control after taking the opener 6-4.

Then the match changed completely.

Kostyuk won the second set 6-0, before maintaining control in the decider and taking it 6-2.

The comeback sends Kostyuk into a quarterfinal meeting with Gauff and ends Andreeva’s Cincinnati run.

Cincinnati Quarterfinals Are Set

Eight players remain in the women’s singles draw.

There is plenty to like in all four matches.

Anisimova-Pegula guarantees an American semifinalist.

Swiatek-Rybakina renews one of the tour’s major matchups almost immediately after their Toronto final.

Gauff-Kostyuk brings together two players who looked increasingly dangerous during the Round of 16.

And then there is Bejlek.

She entered Cincinnati without a WTA 1000 quarterfinal appearance or a Top-10 victory.

She now has both.

Pliskova, Krejcikova, Alexandrova and the World No. 1 have all been beaten.
