WTA Toronto 2026 Roundup | Day 1
The 2026 National Bank Open got underway Sunday in Toronto, beginning nearly two weeks of WTA 1000 tennis at Sobeys Stadium.
The expanded 96-player field features many of the biggest names in women’s tennis, although the tournament’s leading 32 seeds received first-round byes. Aryna Sabalenka leads the draw as the No. 1 seed, followed by Elena Rybakina, Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff.
But Mother Nature had other plans for the opening day.
Rain interrupted play in Toronto and eventually forced the remaining matches to be postponed, leaving the first round to continue on Monday.
Bouzas Makes a Winning Start
Jessica Bouzas Maneiro def. Ariana Arseneault — 6–2, 6–4
Jessica Bouzas Maneiro made a comfortable start to her Toronto campaign with a straight-sets victory over Canadian wild card Ariana Arseneault.
The Spaniard completed the 6–2, 6–4 victory in 78 minutes to move into the second round, where a much tougher challenge awaits against ninth seed Elina Svitolina.
Bouzas arrived in Toronto with good memories of the Canadian event after reaching the quarterfinals in 2025.

Uchijima Advances Past Bucsa
Moyuka Uchijima def. Cristina Bucsa — 6–3, 6–4
Moyuka Uchijima also advanced in straight sets, defeating Cristina Bucsa 6–3, 6–4.
Bucsa looked capable of extending the match after building a 4–1 advantage in the second set, but Uchijima responded strongly and reeled off five consecutive games to close out the victory.
Her reward is about as difficult as it gets: world No. 1 and top seed Aryna Sabalenka awaits in the second round.

Rain Takes Over in Toronto
The weather became the biggest storyline as the day progressed.
Magdalena Frech and Leolia Jeanjean were among those caught by the interruption, with their match suspended before tournament organizers eventually called off the remaining play for the evening.
That means Monday’s schedule will carry additional first-round action as Toronto attempts to catch up.
The Big Names Are Waiting
Because the top 32 seeds received first-round byes, several of the players we’ll be watching throughout Toronto did not need to take the court on opening day.
The seeded field includes Jessica Pegula at No. 3, Mirra Andreeva at No. 5, Iga Swiatek at No. 7, Madison Keys at No. 19, Alex Eala at No. 25 and Leylah Fernandez at No. 30.
Their campaigns will begin as the tournament moves into the second round.
Toronto is only getting started.
