Eala’s Toronto Run Ends as Gauff, Osaka and Rybakina Reach Quarterfinals

Alexandra Eala’s memorable run at the National Bank Open came to an end on Sunday as Belinda Bencic defeated the Filipina 6–4, 6–0 in the Round of 16.

Eala’s exit closed an impressive week in Toronto, but there was plenty more movement across the draw.

Coco Gauff ended Alina Korneeva’s breakthrough campaign, Naomi Osaka silenced the home crowd by defeating Leylah Fernandez, and Elena Rybakina survived a three-set battle against Liudmila Samsonova.

With the Round of 16 complete, the Toronto quarterfinal lineup is set.

Eala’s Toronto Run Ends Against Bencic

Alexandra Eala’s deepest run at this year’s National Bank Open ended at the hands of Belinda Bencic.

The 25th-seeded Filipina stayed competitive throughout the opening set, but Bencic secured the decisive break and took it 6–4.

From there, the Swiss player took control.

Bencic swept through the second set 6–0 to complete a straight-sets victory and book her place in the quarterfinals against Coco Gauff. The result and progression are reflected in the completed Round-of-16 draw.

Result: Belinda Bencic def. Alexandra Eala 6–4, 6–0

The scoreline, particularly in the second set, shouldn’t overshadow Eala’s tournament.

She opened her campaign with a three-set victory over Alycia Parks, then survived another three-set contest against Caty McNally to reach the Round of 16. The official tournament data records her McNally win as 6–3, 5–7, 6–4.

Toronto also demonstrated something increasingly difficult to ignore: Eala attracts attention.

Her matches drew significant interest from Filipino supporters, and her presence became part of the wider atmosphere surrounding the tournament.

For the 21-year-old, Toronto ends in the Round of 16 — but it was another week in which she showed she belongs in increasingly significant WTA matches.

Gauff Ends Korneeva’s Breakthrough Run

Alina Korneeva had been one of Toronto’s most interesting emerging stories.

Coco Gauff provided the reality check.

The American fourth seed defeated Korneeva 6–3, 6–1, ending the young player’s impressive run through the draw.

Result: Coco Gauff def. Alina Korneeva 6–3, 6–1

Korneeva had already beaten Emma Navarro 6–2, 6–2 and Iva Jovic 6–3, 6–4 on her way into the fourth round.

Against Gauff, however, the step up proved substantial.

For Korneeva, Toronto can still be considered a breakthrough week. For Gauff, the objective is much bigger.

She now faces Bencic for a place in the semifinals.

Osaka Ends Fernandez’s Home Run

One of the most anticipated matches of the day put Naomi Osaka against Canadian favorite Leylah Fernandez.

Osaka came through 6–4, 6–4.

Result: Naomi Osaka def. Leylah Fernandez 6–4, 6–4

Fernandez entered the match carrying both strong form and considerable home support after defeating Mirra Andreeva in the previous round.

But Osaka continued what has quietly become one of the strongest campaigns of the tournament.

She had already defeated Panna Udvardy and then dismantled Elise Mertens 6–1, 6–2 before meeting Fernandez.

Now comes a much bigger test.

Rybakina Survives Samsonova in Three Sets

Elena Rybakina had to work considerably harder for her quarterfinal place.

The No. 2 seed defeated Liudmila Samsonova 6–4, 4–6, 6–4 in one of Sunday’s most competitive matches.

Result: Elena Rybakina def. Liudmila Samsonova 6–4, 4–6, 6–4

After splitting the opening two sets, the match went to a deciding third before Rybakina eventually secured the crucial advantage.

It wasn’t necessarily her cleanest performance of the week, but at this stage of a WTA 1000 tournament, surviving can matter just as much as dominating.

And surviving earned Rybakina one of the most intriguing quarterfinals of the tournament.

Osaka vs Rybakina Is Coming

Now things get interesting.

Naomi Osaka vs Elena Rybakina.

Both are major champions. Both possess enormous first-strike power. And both have looked dangerous in Toronto.

Osaka has largely cruised through her recent matches, while Rybakina has already had to survive multiple three-set battles during the tournament.

Their quarterfinal gives Toronto a heavyweight matchup before the semifinals even begin.

On the other side of this half, Coco Gauff will face Belinda Bencic.

Toronto Quarterfinals Are Set

The completed Round of 16 leaves eight players standing:

• Iga Swiatek vs Diana Shnaider
• Ekaterina Alexandrova vs Elina Svitolina
• Belinda Bencic vs Coco Gauff
• Naomi Osaka vs Elena Rybakina

The tournament’s structured draw confirms the other three quarterfinal pairings and Gauff’s progression; Bencic’s victory over Eala completes the remaining slot.

Several major names have already disappeared from the tournament — including Aryna Sabalenka, Jessica Pegula, Madison Keys and Mirra Andreeva.

Now Eala, Fernandez and Korneeva join them.

Eight remain.

And Toronto is entering its business end.

Eala Leaves Toronto With Something Bigger Than a Result

For Eala, there will be no quarterfinal.

But Toronto provided another measure of how quickly her position in women’s tennis is changing.

She won two matches, reached the final 16 of a WTA 1000 event and played another high-profile Centre Court match against an Olympic champion.

Perhaps just as significantly, her presence resonated beyond the court.

Tournament director Karl Hale said Toronto had added chicken adobo to its food offering for the first time in recognition of Eala’s participation and highlighted the support coming from the city’s Filipino community.

That is an unusual footprint for one player to leave on a tournament.

Eala came to Toronto to play tennis.

Toronto ended up getting a taste of the Philippines, too.
