The National Bank Open moved into the quarterfinal stage on Monday, with Iga Swiatek and Elina Svitolina becoming the first two players to book their places in the Toronto semifinals.

Swiatek produced one of her most convincing performances of the tournament to dispatch Diana Shnaider in straight sets, while Svitolina had to recover from a difficult opening set before turning her match against Ekaterina Alexandrova completely around.

The results set up an intriguing semifinal between two experienced players who have taken very different routes through Toronto.

Meanwhile, the other half of the quarterfinal draw remains loaded: Coco Gauff faces Belinda Bencic, while Naomi Osaka meets Elena Rybakina.

Swiatek Overpowers Shnaider

Iga Swiatek def. Diana Shnaider — 6–2, 6–1

Swiatek made short work of Shnaider to become the first woman through to the Toronto semifinals.

After needing three sets to get past Marta Kostyuk in the Round of 16, Swiatek looked considerably more comfortable in her quarterfinal.

The seventh seed controlled the match from the opening set and never allowed Shnaider to establish enough momentum to threaten an upset.

A 6–2 opening set put Swiatek firmly in command before she accelerated further in the second, conceding only one game on her way to a 6–2, 6–1 victory.

The win equals Swiatek’s best result in Canada and puts her one victory away from the Toronto final.

Svitolina Turns the Match Around

Elina Svitolina def. Ekaterina Alexandrova — 3–6, 6–0, 6–3

Svitolina’s route to the semifinals was anything but straightforward.

Alexandrova entered the quarterfinal with plenty of confidence after producing one of the tournament’s biggest upsets, eliminating top seed Aryna Sabalenka in three sets in the previous round.

That momentum carried into Monday’s opening set.

Alexandrova took it 6–3, putting Svitolina under immediate pressure.

Then the match changed completely.

Svitolina responded with a 6–0 second set, wiping away Alexandrova’s advantage and forcing a deciding third.

The Ukrainian completed the turnaround 6–3 in the final set to secure her semifinal place.

From losing the opening set to surrendering just three games across the next two, it was an emphatic recovery.

Swiatek vs Svitolina Is Set

Swiatek arrives after her most dominant performance of the tournament.

Svitolina arrives having demonstrated something different: resilience.

Her Toronto campaign has included a three-set escape against Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, convincing wins over Anastasia Potapova and Amanda Anisimova, and now a comeback victory over Alexandrova.

Swiatek’s road has been more controlled, although Marta Kostyuk pushed her to three sets in the Round of 16 before the Pole responded with Monday’s commanding quarterfinal performance.

Osaka vs Rybakina Headlines the Remaining Quarterfinals

The other half of the draw takes center stage next.

Belinda Bencic vs Coco Gauff

Bencic ended Alexandra Eala’s Toronto run in the Round of 16, while Gauff stopped another of the tournament’s emerging stories by defeating Alina Korneeva.

The winner will reach the Toronto semifinals.

Then comes arguably the heavyweight quarterfinal of the round:

Naomi Osaka vs Elena Rybakina

Osaka has quietly put together an impressive Toronto campaign, including straight-set victories over Elise Mertens and Leylah Fernandez.

Rybakina has had a more demanding route and needed three sets to survive Liudmila Samsonova in the Round of 16.

Both are major champions. Both possess some of the biggest first-strike tennis in the women’s game.

One of them will be going home.

The tournament bracket confirms both quarterfinals are scheduled for Tuesday, with the winners meeting in the second semifinal.

Krawczyk and Hunter Bow Out in Doubles

Kateřina Siniaková / Zhang Shuai def. Storm Hunter / Desirae Krawczyk — 6–4, 6–3

Desirae Krawczyk’s Toronto doubles run ended in the quarterfinals as she and Storm Hunter fell to Kateřina Siniaková and Zhang Shuai in straight sets.

Hunter and Krawczyk had enjoyed an impressive run to the last eight, dropping just six games across their first two matches before meeting the experienced Siniaková-Zhang pairing.

The 6–4, 6–3 defeat leaves Krawczyk with a quarterfinal finish in Toronto as the doubles field moves toward the semifinals.
