WTA Toronto 2026 Roundup | Day 10

Elena Rybakina completed another comeback in Toronto on Tuesday, recovering from a set down to defeat Naomi Osaka and secure the final place in the National Bank Open semifinals.

The much-anticipated quarterfinal delivered three sets before Rybakina prevailed 4–6, 7–6(5), 6–4.

Coco Gauff had a very different route into the final four. Her scheduled quarterfinal against Belinda Bencic never took place after Bencic withdrew with a hip injury, sending Gauff through by walkover.

With Tuesday’s results complete, the Toronto singles semifinals are set:

Rybakina Comes Back to Beat Osaka

Elena Rybakina def. Naomi Osaka — 4–6, 7–6(5), 6–4

Osaka looked ready to continue her impressive Toronto run when she took the opening set 6–4.

She then moved ahead in the second set, putting Rybakina under serious pressure with a semifinal place within reach.

But Rybakina refused to go away.

The No. 2 seed fought back to force a tiebreak, won it 7–5 and carried the momentum into the deciding set.

Rybakina eventually completed the turnaround 6–4 in the third to reach the Toronto semifinals. The comeback continued a theme from her tournament: she has repeatedly been forced to solve difficult matches rather than simply overpower her opponents.

Osaka’s Strong Toronto Run Ends

The defeat ends what had been an encouraging week for Naomi Osaka.

She reached the quarterfinals after victories over Panna Udvardy, Elise Mertens and home favorite Leylah Fernandez, dropping no sets across those three matches.

Against Rybakina, Osaka came within a set — and then within striking distance in the second — of reaching the semifinals.

Instead, Rybakina found a way back.

For Osaka, however, Toronto still provided another indication that she can compete deep into major WTA events.

Bencic Withdraws; Gauff Moves Into Semifinals

The day’s other singles quarterfinal never got started.

Belinda Bencic withdrew ahead of her scheduled match against Coco Gauff because of a hip injury, giving Gauff a walkover into the semifinals.

Bencic had reached the last eight after ending Alexandra Eala’s run in the Round of 16.

Her withdrawal means Gauff advances without taking the court and will be considerably fresher when she faces Rybakina.

That leaves us with a fascinating second semifinal:

Gauff arrives after an unexpected day off.

Rybakina arrives after surviving another physical three-set battle.

Their paths could hardly be more different.

Gauff has already ended Alina Korneeva’s breakthrough Toronto run, while Rybakina has navigated difficult matches against Daria Kasatkina, Liudmila Samsonova and now Osaka.

One more victory puts either player into the Toronto final.

Doubles: Errani and Melichar-Martinez Reach the Final

The doubles tournament also moved closer to its conclusion.

Sara Errani / Nicole Melichar-Martinez def. Hsieh Su-wei / Jelena Ostapenko — 6–1, 4–6, [10–8]

Errani and Melichar-Martinez dominated the opening set before Hsieh and Ostapenko responded to force a match tiebreak.

The deciding tiebreak was tight, but Errani and Melichar-Martinez edged it 10–8 to become the first team through to the Toronto doubles final.

The second semifinal will feature Kateřina Siniaková / Zhang Shuai against Tereza Mihalíková / Olivia Nicholls.

Siniaková and Zhang are the team that ended the Toronto run of our doubles watchlist player Desirae Krawczyk and Storm Hunter in the quarterfinals.

Four Women Remain in Toronto

After a 96-player singles draw, only four remain:

Iga Swiatek
Elina Svitolina
Coco Gauff
Elena Rybakina

Swiatek has looked increasingly commanding.

Svitolina has shown resilience.

Gauff enters the semifinals rested.

Rybakina enters battle-tested.

The next matches decide who plays for the National Bank Open title.
