Iga Swiatek and Elena Rybakina survived a pair of three-set semifinals Wednesday night in Toronto, eliminating Elina Svitolina and Coco Gauff to move within one victory of the WTA 1000 title.

Rain pushed back the start of play at Sobeys Stadium, but once the action began, both semifinals delivered dramatic swings in momentum.

Swiatek recovered after being overwhelmed in the second set to defeat Svitolina 6–3, 1–6, 6–3, while Rybakina came from a set down for yet another comeback victory, beating Gauff 5–7, 6–2, 6–2.

In doubles, top seeds Kateřina Siniaková and Zhang Shuai also booked their place in the championship match.

Swiatek Holds Off Svitolina

Swiatek appeared to be taking control quickly when she raced ahead in the opening set.

The seventh seed won the first four games and eventually closed out the set 6–3, putting herself one set away from her first National Bank Open final.

Then Svitolina completely changed the match.

The Ukrainian became far more aggressive in the second set and surged to a 5–0 advantage. Swiatek avoided the shutout, but Svitolina comfortably completed a 6–1 second set to force a decider.

Svitolina carried that momentum into the third and broke Swiatek to lead 3–2.

That was as close as she would get.

Swiatek immediately broke back and won the final four games of the match, completing a 6–3, 1–6, 6–3 victory and earning her place in the Toronto final.

Rybakina Comes Back Again

Elena Rybakina def. Coco Gauff — 5–7, 6–2, 6–2

Elena Rybakina has made comebacks something of a habit in Toronto.

Against Coco Gauff, she needed another one.

The opening set remained on serve through 11 games before Gauff finally broke Rybakina to take it 7–5.

But the match changed sharply in the second set.

Rybakina found the first break for a 3–2 advantage and began taking control of the rallies. She won 12 of the next 14 points as Gauff’s level dropped and closed the set 6–2.

The deciding set followed a similar pattern.

Rybakina broke for a 3–2 lead, added another break and won the final five games to complete the comeback.

5–7, 6–2, 6–2.

Another three-set victory.

Another Toronto comeback.

And this time, a place in the final.

Rybakina’s Remarkable Three-Set Run Continues

Rybakina’s route through Toronto has been anything but straightforward.

She needed three sets against Daria Kasatkina.

She needed three against Liudmila Samsonova.

She came from behind to beat Naomi Osaka in three.

And now she has recovered from losing the opening set against Gauff.

That makes four three-set victories during her Toronto run.

Rather than cruising through the draw, Rybakina has repeatedly found herself under pressure and repeatedly found a way out.

Now only Swiatek stands between her and the title.

Swiatek enters after surviving her first major momentum swing of the week against Svitolina.

Rybakina enters after perhaps the most battle-tested run of anyone in the draw.

Both have won Grand Slam titles.

Both have produced some of their best tennis when under pressure in Toronto.

Siniaková and Zhang Reach the Doubles Final

The doubles draw also moved one step closer to its conclusion.

Kateřina Siniaková / Zhang Shuai def. Tereza Mihalíková / Olivia Nicholls — 6–1, 7–5

The top seeds dominated the opening stages, taking the first set 6–1 and moving ahead in the second before rain interrupted play.

Mihalíková and Nicholls responded after the restart and briefly turned the second set around, but Siniaková and Zhang regained control to close out the match in straight sets.

They advance to face Sara Errani and Nicole Melichar-Martinez for the Toronto doubles title.

Siniaková and Zhang’s path to the final also included the quarterfinal victory that ended the run of Storm Hunter and Tennis Roundup watchlist player Desirae Krawczyk.

A tournament that began with a 96-player singles draw has reached its final two.
