WTA Toronto 2026 Roundup | Day 12 — Finals

Iga Swiatek is the 2026 National Bank Open champion.

Swiatek completed her Toronto campaign with a commanding 6–2, 6–3 victory over Elena Rybakina in Thursday’s singles final, capturing her first National Bank Open title and her first WTA Tour title of the season.

Earlier in the day, top seeds Kateřina Siniaková and Zhang Shuai completed a flawless doubles campaign, defeating Sara Errani and Nicole Melichar-Martinez 6–3, 6–4 to lift the trophy without dropping a set throughout the tournament.

After 12 days of Tennis Roundup coverage, Toronto has its champions.

Swiatek Takes Control of the Final

A final between Swiatek and Rybakina promised one of the tournament’s most intriguing matchups.

Their rivalry entered Toronto remarkably balanced, with the pair tied 6–6 in their previous 12 meetings.

On Thursday, however, Swiatek was firmly in control.

She took the opening set 6–2 and prevented Rybakina from producing the kind of turnaround that had defined so much of the Kazakh’s Toronto campaign.

Rybakina had survived a string of difficult three-set matches on her way to the final, including comeback victories over Naomi Osaka and Coco Gauff.

There would be no comeback this time.

Swiatek maintained the pressure in the second set and closed out the championship 6–2, 6–3.

Swiatek Finally Conquers Canada

The victory gives Swiatek her 26th career WTA singles title and her first title of the 2026 season.

It also gives her something that had previously been missing from her résumé: the National Bank Open trophy.

Toronto had not always been one of Swiatek’s happiest hunting grounds, but her 2026 campaign became increasingly convincing as the tournament progressed.

She survived Marta Kostyuk in three sets in the Round of 16 before overpowering Diana Shnaider in the quarterfinals.

Elina Svitolina then pushed her through another three-set battle in the semifinals.

Against Rybakina, Swiatek saved her most authoritative performance for last.

Rybakina’s Battle-Tested Run Ends One Match Short

The final score should not obscure the tournament Rybakina produced.

Her route to the championship match required extraordinary resilience.

She survived Daria Kasatkina in three sets.

She survived Liudmila Samsonova in three.

She came from behind to eliminate Naomi Osaka.

Then she lost the opening set against Coco Gauff before turning the semifinal around to win in three.

Four three-set victories carried Rybakina into the final.

Swiatek finally stopped the pattern.

Rybakina leaves Toronto as runner-up, but also as one of the defining players of the tournament.

Siniaková and Zhang Complete a Perfect Doubles Run

Toronto’s doubles champions did something even more emphatic.

Top seeds Kateřina Siniaková and Zhang Shuai defeated Errani and Melichar-Martinez in straight sets to capture the title.

And they did it without dropping a set during the entire tournament.

Siniaková and Zhang also ended the run of Tennis Roundup watchlist player Desirae Krawczyk and Storm Hunter in the quarterfinals before defeating Tereza Mihalíková and Olivia Nicholls in the semifinals.

The 6–3, 6–4 victory in Thursday’s final completed an undefeated-set run through Toronto and gave the top seeds a deserved championship.

Toronto 2026: The Players Who Shaped the Tournament

Swiatek leaves with the trophy, but Toronto produced far more than one storyline.

Elena Rybakina repeatedly fought her way out of difficult matches before reaching the final.

Coco Gauff reached the semifinals before Rybakina ended her campaign.

Naomi Osaka produced one of her strongest runs of the tournament season before coming within a set of eliminating Rybakina in the quarterfinals.

Alina Korneeva announced herself with a breakthrough run to the Round of 16 before meeting Gauff.

Leylah Fernandez carried Canadian hopes into the fourth round.

And Alexandra Eala reached the Round of 16, drew considerable support from Toronto’s Filipino community and became one of the tournament’s most visible stories before Belinda Bencic ended her run.

Aryna Sabalenka, Jessica Pegula, Madison Keys and Mirra Andreeva all departed earlier than they would have hoped, helping open a draw that produced surprises throughout the second week.

In doubles, Desirae Krawczyk and Storm Hunter reached the quarterfinals before running into the eventual champions.
