China Open 2026 Day 8: Zheng Qinwen Survives Again as Quarterfinals Take Shape
Zheng Qinwen has apparently decided that two sets are not enough in Beijing.
Four matches.
Four three-setters.
Four victories.
The latest came Wednesday against Alina Charaeva, the player who had already knocked World No. 1 Elena Rybakina out of the China Open.
Zheng won 6–1, 2–6, 6–4 in 2 hours and 11 minutes to reach the quarterfinals and end one of the tournament’s most surprising runs.
There may be a new nickname developing in Beijing.
The Three-Set Queen.
And Queenwen is still standing.
Zheng Qinwen Survives — Again
Zheng’s afternoon started as though this might finally be the straightforward one.
She took the opening set against Charaeva 6–1.
Then Beijing returned to the script Zheng has been following throughout the tournament.
Charaeva answered 6–2 in the second set, forcing another decider.
For Zheng, that meant familiar territory.
She had already survived three consecutive three-set matches to reach the Round of 16. Against Charaeva, she did it for a fourth time, taking the deciding set 6–4 and advancing to the last eight.
Her Beijing record now reads almost absurdly neatly:
4 matches.
4 three-setters.
4 wins.
She has not won a match in straight sets at this China Open.
But she hasn’t lost one either.

The Ice-Side Shockwave Ends
There was another layer to Zheng’s victory.
Charaeva was responsible for one of the results that completely changed this tournament.
She defeated Rybakina 3–6, 6–4, 6–3 in what had been Rybakina’s first match as World No. 1.
Then Charaeva proved it wasn’t simply one extraordinary afternoon, beating Sonay Kartal in the following round.
But she couldn’t take the next step.
Zheng stopped her one match short of a first WTA 1000 quarterfinal.
That leaves an interesting asymmetry in the wreckage of Beijing’s original projected final.
Rybakina’s conqueror is gone.
Aryna Sabalenka’s conqueror, Nikola Bartunkova, is still here.
Bartunkova followed her upset of Sabalenka by defeating Sinja Kraus and reaching the quarterfinals, where she will face Karolina Muchova.
For the first time since Beijing lost its top two seeds, only one of their conquerors remains.
Zheng Joins Li Na and Zhang Shuai
Zheng’s victory also placed her alongside two important names in Chinese tennis history.
This is her third WTA 1000 quarterfinal on Chinese soil, tying Li Na and Zhang Shuai.
And this one comes at home with an unusual amount of tennis already in her legs.
Four matches.
Twelve sets.
Four deciding-set victories.
Next comes Elina Svitolina—and Zheng’s accumulated workload is becoming part of the story.
The Three-Set Queen may eventually want a two-set afternoon.
Elise Mertens Knocks Out Coco Gauff
The biggest seed upset of Wednesday belonged to Elise Mertens.
The No. 13 seed defeated No. 3 Coco Gauff 6–3, 6–3 in 78 minutes.
It was Mertens’ first victory over Gauff in six meetings.
Gauff finished with 34 unforced errors and eight double faults as Mertens eliminated the 2024 Beijing champion.
The result sends Mertens into a quarterfinal against Iga Świątek.
For Mertens, it also extends a productive stretch following her run to the Singapore final.
For Gauff, Beijing is over.
She subsequently withdrew from the Wuhan Open, citing fatigue after a draining few days. That withdrawal came after the completed Beijing match and should be treated separately from the result itself.

This Time, Świątek Took Control
Iga Świątek needed an escape in her previous round.
Against Iva Jovic, she didn’t.
Świątek defeated the 18-year-old American 6–1, 6–3 in 1 hour and 35 minutes to advance to the quarterfinals.
It was a very different afternoon from her comeback against Donna Vekic.
This time there was no deciding set.
No rescue mission.
Just control.
Jovic’s Beijing run ends here, but one loss to a former China Open champion doesn’t change the larger story of her rise.
Świątek moves on.
And Mertens—the woman who just defeated Gauff for the first time—is waiting.

Svitolina Sets Up a Meeting With Queenwen
Elina Svitolina completed the final piece of the quarterfinal bracket with a 6–0, 6–4 victory over Ann Li.
There was little drama in the scoreline.
That may matter.
Svitolina arrives in the quarterfinal after a straight-sets victory. Zheng arrives after four consecutive matches that required deciding sets.
Now they meet for a place in the semifinals:
Zheng Qinwen vs. Elina Svitolina.
The home contender has survived everything Beijing has thrown at her so far.
The question is how much those four battles have taken out of her.

Developing Storylines
Beijing began with the possibility of a Rybakina–Sabalenka final.
Neither made it through the early rounds.
For a while, their conquerors created two parallel stories.
That symmetry is now gone.
Charaeva beat Rybakina → beat Kartal → lost to Zheng.
Bartunkova beat Sabalenka → beat Kraus → reached the quarterfinals.
One shockwave has ended.
The other continues against Muchova.
Meanwhile, Mirra Andreeva remains the highest seed left in the tournament and faces Ekaterina Alexandrova. Świątek faces the player who just removed Gauff. And Zheng has somehow turned deciding sets into her preferred route through Beijing.
Four quarterfinals.
Four very different stories.
