Ningbo Open 2026 Day 4: Katarzyna Kawa Breaks Through to Face Rybakina
At 33, a Polish qualifier claims her first Top 20 victory. Elsewhere, Alex Eala’s Ningbo journey ends, Iva Jovic advances, and the quarterfinal lineup is complete.
Ningbo Open 2026 Day 4: Kawa Gives the Challengers a New Voice
At 33 years old, Katarzyna Kawa is still discovering new milestones in professional tennis.
On Thursday at the Ningbo Open, the Polish qualifier defeated fifth seed Belinda Bencic 7–5, 6–2 to claim the first Top 20 victory of her career.
It was more than an upset.
For Kawa, ranked No. 128 entering the match, the victory also secured her first WTA Tour quarterfinal on hard courts and her first quarterfinal at WTA 500 level or higher.
Her reward is a meeting with defending champion and top seed Elena Rybakina.
While some of Ningbo’s most recognizable names saw their campaigns end, Kawa emerged as an unexpected contender in a tournament increasingly shaped by challengers.
Four Round of 16 matches completed the quarterfinal field on October 22. Iva Jovic defeated Jasmine Paolini, Diana Shnaider ended Alex Eala’s run, and Rybakina advanced when Polina Kudermetova retired.
By the end of Day 4, only three seeded players remained.
Katarzyna Kawa: A Breakthrough at 33
Kawa arrived in Ningbo through qualifying, far from the attention surrounding the tournament’s leading seeds.
Her path had already been unusual.
During qualifying, both Katie Volynets and Daria Snigur retired from their respective matches against her. Kawa subsequently faced Snigur again in the main draw, this time earning a completed 1–6, 6–2, 6–4 victory.
Against Bencic, however, there was no unfinished contest.
Kawa delivered a 7–5, 6–2 victory in one hour and 43 minutes, producing 31 winners and converting five of her 15 break-point opportunities.
The result was particularly significant because Bencic entered the match ranked No. 14 and had reached quarterfinals at Miami, Toronto and Charleston during 2026.
Kawa had previously reached two WTA Tour singles finals, at Jurmala in 2019 and Bogotá in 2025. Both were played on clay, and neither produced a title.
Ningbo now offers a different kind of milestone: a breakthrough on hard courts, against an established opponent, at a higher tournament level.
And the challenge becomes greater on Friday.
Kawa will face Rybakina for the first time on the WTA Tour.

Alex Eala’s Ningbo Journey Ends Against Diana Shnaider
Alex Eala’s Redemption Road reached its conclusion in the Round of 16.
Sixth seed Diana Shnaider defeated the Filipina 7–5, 6–4 in one hour and 55 minutes, ending Eala’s hopes of advancing to a potential quarterfinal against Iva Jovic.
Yet the straight-sets score did not tell the whole story.
The opening set began with eight consecutive holds of serve before Eala was broken at 4–4. Shnaider initially failed to serve out the set, but eventually recovered to take it 7–5.
The second set was even more unpredictable.
Six consecutive breaks of serve opened the set before Eala finally held for 3–3.
She later had an opportunity to break for a 5–3 lead but could not convert. Shnaider broke instead to move ahead 5–4.
Then came the final game.

Six Match Points Saved — But Shnaider Prevails
Eala refused to surrender.
In a final game that stretched through seven deuces, she saved six match points and earned two break-point opportunities of her own.
But neither break point was converted.
On her seventh match point, Shnaider finally secured victory.
The match statistics reflected the competitive nature of the contest while also showing the difference in execution.
Across the two sets, Shnaider recorded 29 winners and 23 unforced errors. Eala produced 24 winners and 30 unforced errors.
Shnaider acknowledged Eala’s aggressive approach afterward, describing how her opponent continued stepping forward and attacking the ball.
For Eala, Ningbo brought both a small recovery and another disappointment.
Her opening-round victory over Diane Parry, 6–3, 6–1, ended a three-match WTA Tour losing streak.
But Shnaider prevented that victory from developing into a deeper tournament run.
The anticipated meeting with Jovic will have to wait.
Eala’s Ningbo journey ended with one victory and a hard-fought Round of 16 defeat.
Her broader development continues beyond this tournament, but the Ningbo chapter of our Redemption Road storyline is now complete.
Iva Jovic Overcomes Paolini to Reach the Quarterfinals
While Eala’s campaign ended, Iva Jovic continued hers.
The fourth seed defeated Jasmine Paolini 6–4, 6–3 in one hour and 22 minutes, recovering from an early deficit to secure her seventh WTA Tour quarterfinal appearance of 2026.
Paolini initially broke for a 3–1 lead in the opening set.
Jovic responded with two breaks of serve to take the set 6–4.
In the second, the American teenager established a 4–1 advantage before Paolini reduced the deficit to 4–3.
Jovic steadied herself, held serve and broke again to complete the victory.
The result marked her 20th career victory against a Top 50 opponent and brought her head-to-head record against Paolini level at 2–2.
It also extended an impressive 2026 season.
Before Ningbo, Jovic had reached five semifinals from six quarterfinal appearances during the year.
Her next opponent is Diana Shnaider.
The two previously met in Dubai in February, where Jovic won 6–4, 1–6, 6–0.
Their Ningbo quarterfinal offers another test of Jovic’s development, independent of the Eala matchup that never materialized.

Rybakina Advances as Kudermetova Retires
Elena Rybakina’s title defense continues, although her opening appearance provided little opportunity to assess her sustained form.
The defending champion led qualifier Polina Kudermetova 5–0 after 30 minutes when Kudermetova retired.
According to the official WTA report, Kudermetova received treatment during the match before attempting to continue. The official draw identified a shoulder issue.
The retirement occurred before the opening set was completed.
Rybakina therefore advanced without completing a full set, and the result should not be mistaken for a routine 6–0 victory or a walkover.
Her next opponent, Katarzyna Kawa, presents a very different challenge.
While Rybakina has played only five games in the main draw, Kawa has navigated qualifying and two main-draw matches to reach the quarterfinals.
The defending champion’s pursuit of another Ningbo title remains alive.

The Story Nobody Could Guarantee
Kawa’s breakthrough is particularly interesting because she was not one of our individually named pre-tournament protagonists.
She emerged through the matches themselves.
That is precisely why our Challengers Beyond the Headlines storyline matters.
The original seeds establish what we should watch. The results determine which players ultimately deserve the spotlight.
For Eala, the anticipated redemption run ended early.
For Jovic, the opportunity continues.
For Rybakina, the title defense remains alive.
And for Kawa, Ningbo has already become a milestone tournament.
What’s Next: The Ningbo Open Quarterfinals
Friday, October 23, brings all four women’s singles quarterfinals.
Elena Rybakina [1] vs Katarzyna Kawa [Q]
The defending champion meets the tournament’s remaining qualifier.
Rybakina has advanced after just five games of main-draw tennis. Kawa arrives after the biggest ranked victory of her career.
It will be their first WTA Tour meeting.
Iva Jovic [4] vs Diana Shnaider [6]
Jovic enters after overcoming Paolini.
Shnaider has survived two demanding matches, saving five set points against Yulia Putintseva in the opening round before needing seven match points to defeat Eala.
Jovic won their previous meeting in Dubai earlier this year.
Leylah Fernandez vs Ekaterina Alexandrova
Fernandez has already survived two three-set battles in Ningbo.
Alexandrova advanced past Marta Kostyuk after the Ukrainian retired following the first set.
Their quarterfinal also renews a recent Wuhan encounter, won by Fernandez.
Alexandrova leads their overall head-to-head 3–2 entering the match.
Sara Bejlek vs Marie Bouzková
An all-Czech quarterfinal guarantees one Czech semifinalist.
Bejlek eliminated eighth seed Sorana Cîrstea after saving two set points in the opening set.
Bouzková overcame Anastasia Zakharova after saving four set points in her first set.
Both now have an opportunity to extend their Ningbo campaigns into the final four.
