Singapore Tennis Open 2026 Day 4: Prozorova Breaks the Script

The Singapore Tennis Open 2026 Day 4 began with Alexandra Eala carrying one of the tournament’s biggest expectations.

It ended with Tatiana Prozorova creating a story of her own.

The World No. 180 came from a set and 4–2 down to defeat Singapore’s No. 3 seed 4–6, 7–5, 6–3 in a three-hour, nine-minute battle, earning the first Top 20 victory of her career and reaching her first WTA quarterfinal.

Remarkably, she had already done almost exactly the same thing once this week.

Meanwhile, Wang Xinyu recovered from an early deficit to reach the last eight, Talia Gibson survived two tiebreaks, and Maria Sakkari completed the quarterfinal lineup.

Day 4 didn’t simply complete Singapore’s final eight.

It broke one of the tournament’s expected stories and replaced it with another.

Singapore Tennis Open 2026 Day 4 Results

Four Round-of-16 singles matches completed the Singapore quarterfinal field Thursday:

In doubles, Tang Qianhui and Xu Yifan defeated top seeds Storm Hunter and Desirae Krawczyk 6–3, 6–1, while Sofia Costoulas and Talia Gibson beat No. 4 seeds Kristina Mladenovic and Alexandra Panova 6–3, 7–6(4).

Joanna Garland and Hsieh Su-wei also advanced when Erin Routliffe and Aldila Sutjiadi retired after Garland and Hsieh won the opening set 6–4.

But the match that changed the story of Singapore lasted longer than any of them.

Prozorova Breaks the Script

Eala arrived in Singapore as the No. 3 seed, a Top 20 player and one of the names expected to take advantage of a draw already transformed by withdrawals.

Prozorova arrived ranked No. 180 with only three previous tour-level match wins.

For a while, the hierarchy looked exactly as expected.

Eala won the opening set 6–4 and moved ahead 4–2 in the second. She even held a point that would have given her a 5–2 lead with a double break.

She never got there.

Prozorova escaped the danger, turned the second set around 7–5 and carried her attacking tennis through the deciding set to complete the biggest victory of her career.

She struck 52 winners to Eala’s 24 on the way to her first Top 20 win.

The ranking gap makes it an upset.

What happened before it makes Prozorova something more interesting than a one-match surprise.

She Was Down a Set and 4–2. Again.

Rewind to Prozorova’s first round against Sofia Costoulas.

She lost the opening set.

Then she fell behind 4–2 in the second.

Prozorova recovered and eventually won 5–7, 7–6(2), 6–2 after two hours and 51 minutes.

Against Eala?

Opening set lost.

4–2 down in the second. Again.

Another comeback.

Another three-set victory.

This one took three hours and nine minutes.

The arithmetic tells the story rather neatly:

Two matches.
Two set-and-4–2 deficits.
Two comebacks.
Exactly six hours on court.

And now, for the first time in her career, Tatiana Prozorova is a WTA quarterfinalist.

Eala’s Contender Story Ends Early

Before the tournament, we called Eala something she hadn’t often been at this level:

a contender rather than an outsider.

She entered Singapore as the No. 3 seed. When No. 2 Amanda Anisimova withdrew before playing, Eala became the highest remaining seed in the lower half.

The draw had opened.

But an opportunity is not a result.

After receiving a first-round bye, Eala’s Singapore campaign began and ended in the Round of 16.

It also closes another thread we had been following.

Eala and Leylah Fernandez began Singapore in opposite halves, leaving open the possibility — nothing more — of their paths eventually meeting.

That possibility is now gone.

Fernandez remains alive and faces No. 1 seed Mirra Andreeva in the quarterfinals. Eala’s route ended before their stories could meet on court.

The defeat also ends Eala’s immediate WTA opportunity in Singapore before she steps away from the Tour for the Asian Games. She will not compete at the China Open in Beijing, where her absence is listed as a schedule change.

Her Asian swing is not finished, however. Eala is currently entered in the Wuhan Open, the WTA 1000 event beginning October 12.

The contender story wasn’t wrong because Eala lost.

It was an expectation Singapore was going to test.

Prozorova supplied the answer.

Wang Xinyu Is Waiting

Prozorova won’t have much time to celebrate.

Wang Xinyu awaits in the quarterfinals after defeating qualifier Joanna Garland 7–5, 6–4.

Wang had her own recovery to make on Day 4, coming back from 4–1 down in the opening set before taking control of the match.

She also emerges as the lone Asian player in the singles quarterfinal field after Garland, Eala and Nao Hibino exited on Thursday.

Now Wang meets the woman who has made escaping deficits her defining Singapore habit.

Wang Xinyu vs Tatiana Prozorova.

One quarterfinalist recovered from 4–1 down on Day 4.

The other seems almost unwilling to start winning until she’s in trouble.

Sakkari Completes the Quarterfinal Board

The final place in the last eight belonged to Maria Sakkari.

The No. 7 seed defeated Nao Hibino 7–5, 6–1, pulling away after a competitive opening set to set up a quarterfinal against Talia Gibson.

Gibson had already survived a much tighter afternoon.

The Australian needed two tiebreaks to defeat lucky loser Viktoria Morvayova 7–6(2), 7–6(1) in two hours and 18 minutes.

That leaves Sakkari as the only seeded player remaining in the lower half after Anisimova’s withdrawal and Eala’s defeat.

But Gibson isn’t leaving Day 4 with only a singles quarterfinal.

She and Sofia Costoulas also advanced to the doubles semifinals with their straight-sets victory over Mladenovic and Panova.

Singapore Tennis Open 2026 Quarterfinals

Four matches now stand between eight players and the Singapore semifinals:

Mirra Andreeva (1) vs Leylah Fernandez (6)
Elise Mertens (4) vs Maja Chwalinska (5)
Wang Xinyu vs Tatiana Prozorova
Maria Sakkari (7) vs Talia Gibson

And each arrives with a story already attached.

Andreeva finally has to face the player who has beaten her twice on hard courts.

Mertens, the defending champion, finally has to play a singles match — and does so against a Chwalinska who has dropped only three games in two rounds.

Prozorova has spent six hours escaping.

And the lower half that once seemed to be opening for Eala now contains only one remaining seed.

Day 4 finished assembling the quarterfinals.

Day 5 will start tearing them apart.
