After rain disrupted Sunday’s opening day, the National Bank Open returned Monday with the women’s first round continuing at Sobeys Stadium.

With the tournament’s top 32 seeds receiving first-round byes, Day 2 was largely about determining who would earn the opportunity to face the seeded players waiting in the second round.

And with several intriguing performances across the grounds, the Toronto draw began taking shape.

Cross Delivers a Home Win

Kayla Cross def. Katie Boulter — 7–6(3), 7–5

Canadian wild card Kayla Cross gave the home crowd something to celebrate with a straight-sets victory over Britain’s Katie Boulter.

The opening set required a tiebreak before Cross took control, and she completed the upset 7–6(3), 7–5 to move into the second round.

For a Canadian player competing at home, it was exactly the kind of start that can turn a first-round opportunity into something bigger.

Ruzic Battles Past Boisson

Antonia Ruzic def. Lois Boisson — 4–6, 6–1, 6–3

Antonia Ruzic had to come from behind against qualifier Lois Boisson.

After dropping the opening set 4–6, Ruzic responded emphatically by taking the second 6–1 before completing the turnaround 6–3 in the deciding set.

The victory earned Ruzic a second-round meeting with Madison Keys, bringing one of the players on our watchlist into the tournament.

The Seeds Are Ready to Enter

With the opening round concluding, attention now begins shifting toward the seeded players who received first-round byes.

That includes several names we’ll be watching closely throughout Toronto, including Alex Eala, Leylah Fernandez, Jessica Pegula, Madison Keys and Mirra Andreeva.

The transition from Round 1 to Round 2 is where the tournament should begin to look very different: the biggest names are about to join the action.

Eala Arrives in Toronto as a WTA Champion

One particularly interesting storyline was developing away from Toronto on Monday.

Alex Eala completed the rain-delayed Washington final by defeating Jessica Pegula 4–6, 6–4, 6–0 to win her first WTA Tour singles title.

The victory made Eala the first player from the Philippines to win a WTA Tour-level singles championship and extended an extraordinary run of success against highly ranked opponents.

But there was little time to celebrate.

Both Eala and Pegula were heading directly from Washington to Toronto, where their first-round byes provided a valuable extra day before beginning their National Bank Open campaigns.

For Eala in particular, Toronto now presents a fascinating question: how quickly can she reset after the biggest title of her career?

Tuesday marks the beginning of the second round, bringing the seeded players into the tournament.

That means the early Toronto picture is about to become considerably clearer as the leading contenders finally take the court.
