Wuhan Open 2026 Day 4: Ann Li and Ostapenko Keep Their Upset Runs Alive
The Wuhan Open 2026 Day 4 belonged to the players who refused to let their biggest victories become their final chapters.
A day after Ann Li eliminated top seed Aryna Sabalenka and Jelena Ostapenko knocked out second seed Jessica Pegula, both returned to the court and won again.
Li defeated Janice Tjen to advance to a quarterfinal meeting with Iga Swiatek. Ostapenko survived a three-set contest against Leylah Fernandez and will next face Diana Shnaider.
Elsewhere, Sonay Kartal delivered one of the day’s most convincing results, defeating Jasmine Paolini 6–2, 6–0 after already eliminating Belinda Bencic.
By the end of Thursday’s Round of 16, the eight remaining players had become four confirmed quarterfinal matchups.
The favorites who fell on Wednesday had changed the tournament. Thursday revealed who was ready to take advantage.
Wuhan Open 2026 Day 4: The Upset-Makers Return
Ann Li: From Sabalenka to Swiatek
Ann Li arrived at the Round of 16 carrying one of the biggest stories of the tournament.
Her three-set victory over Aryna Sabalenka had ended the top seed’s pursuit of a fourth Wuhan title. The question was whether Li could follow that extraordinary result with another victory.
Against Indonesia’s Janice Tjen, the American answered with a 6–1, 7–6(1) win.
Li dominated the opening set before Tjen offered greater resistance in the second. But Li took the tiebreak decisively to secure her place in the last eight.
The player who ended Sabalenka’s Wuhan ambitions now faces another major challenge.
Watch Li vs Tjen highlights:
Iga Swiatek awaits in the quarterfinals.
For Li, the significance of this run is no longer limited to the name of the opponent she defeated. She has followed her biggest headline with another result, turning an upset into a developing tournament campaign.
Our pre-match question was simple: Who stops the Dragon-Slayer?
Tjen could not provide the answer.
Swiatek gets the next opportunity.
Jelena Ostapenko: Another Three-Set Victory
Jelena Ostapenko also returned to the court with an extraordinary result behind her.
In the previous round, the Latvian had saved three match points before eliminating No. 2 seed Jessica Pegula.
Her next opponent, Leylah Fernandez, had ended Chinese qualifier Han Shi’s run to reach the Round of 16.
Their meeting developed into a contest of contrasting sets.
Ostapenko claimed the opener 6–1. Fernandez responded by taking the second 6–1. The deciding set went Ostapenko’s way, 6–4.
Ostapenko defeated Fernandez 6–1, 1–6, 6–4.
The result ended Fernandez’s singles campaign and sent Ostapenko into the quarterfinals.
It also resolved another of Tennis Roundup’s pre-match questions: Two Survivors, One Quarterfinal Place.
Ostapenko was the survivor who advanced.
Her next opponent is Diana Shnaider, who ended Karolina Muchova’s run in straight sets.

Sonay Kartal: Two Seeded Victories and a New Story
While Li and Ostapenko commanded attention following their victories over the top two seeds, Sonay Kartal was creating another storyline.
The British player had already defeated No. 9 seed Belinda Bencic.
On Thursday, she followed that victory with a commanding performance against No. 15 seed Jasmine Paolini.
Kartal won 6–2, 6–0.
Two seeded opponents had now fallen to the same unseeded challenger.
The score against Paolini was particularly striking. Kartal conceded only two games on her way to the quarterfinals.
The result gives her run a new dimension.
She is no longer simply the player who upset Bencic. She has backed up that result against another seeded opponent.
Her next challenge is fifth seed Elina Svitolina, who defeated Guo Hanyu 6–1, 6–4.
If Kartal is to reach the semifinals, she must overcome a third seeded opponent in succession.

Shnaider Ends Muchova’s Wuhan Run
Karolina Muchova had survived a demanding three-set match against Caty McNally in the previous round.
But her Wuhan campaign ended against Diana Shnaider.
The No. 11 seed defeated Muchova, seeded sixth, 7–5, 6–3 to reach the quarterfinals.
For Muchova, the defeat closes a run that had required considerable resistance just one round earlier.
For Shnaider, the victory creates a quarterfinal against Jelena Ostapenko.
Both players enter that meeting after eliminating seeded opponents during the tournament.
Their matchup offers another opportunity for one of Wuhan’s developing contenders to move closer to the final.

Teenagers: Pohankova and Jovic Exit Wuhan
Two of the most interesting emerging players in the women’s singles draw also saw their campaigns end on Thursday.
Mia Pohankova Falls to Maria Sakkari
Seventeen-year-old Mia Pohankova had already produced a notable victory over Asian Games gold medalist Wang Xiyu.
The Slovak teenager’s next opponent was Maria Sakkari, a former world No. 3 seeking to rebuild her position among the leading players.
Sakkari took control of their Round of 16 encounter and won 6–1, 6–4.
The result ended Pohankova’s Wuhan singles run, but not the significance of her earlier victory.
A junior Grand Slam champion testing herself against experienced senior opponents, Pohankova leaves Wuhan with another chapter in her development.
For Sakkari, the victory extends her campaign into the quarterfinals.
Watch Pohankova vs Sakkari highlights:
Maja Chwalinska Stops Iva Jovic
Eighteen-year-old Iva Jovic also entered Thursday’s matches hoping to extend her run.
But Poland’s Maja Chwalinska defeated the American 6–4, 6–1.
Chwalinska had already recovered from a difficult opening set to defeat Marie Bouzkova in the previous round.
Now she has followed that comeback with a straight-sets victory over Jovic.
The two surviving teenage singles players tracked in Tennis Roundup’s Wuhan coverage have therefore both been eliminated.
Their individual campaigns have ended, but their progress remains part of the wider Teenagers story beyond this tournament.
Chwalinska, meanwhile, advances to face Sakkari.

Swiatek Advances as Svitolina Ends Guo’s Singles Run
Iga Swiatek Sets Up Ann Li Quarterfinal
Iga Swiatek defeated Ashlyn Krueger 6–1, 6–4 to reach the last eight.
The seventh seed now faces Ann Li in one of Friday’s most anticipated quarterfinals.
Swiatek brings the experience of a multiple Grand Slam champion. Li arrives after defeating the tournament’s top seed and following it with another victory.
For Swiatek, the challenge is to stop a player whose confidence in the draw is supported by two significant results.
For Li, the question is whether her Wuhan run can survive another meeting with one of the sport’s most accomplished players.
Elina Svitolina Defeats Guo Hanyu
Elina Svitolina ended Guo Hanyu’s singles campaign with a 6–1, 6–4 victory.
Guo had reached the Round of 16 after two dramatic three-set wins, including a first-round escape against Sorana Cirstea in which she saved three match points.
The Chinese wildcard’s singles run had become one of Wuhan’s compelling home-player stories.
Svitolina’s victory closes that chapter and sends the fifth seed into a quarterfinal against Sonay Kartal.
For Kartal, the next match offers the chance to defeat a third seeded opponent.
For Svitolina, it is an opportunity to stop one of the tournament’s developing surprise runs.
Developing Storylines: What Day 4 Changed
The Round of 16 did more than reduce the singles field from 16 players to eight.
It reshaped several of the stories that began before the tournament.
The Sabalenka storyline has become Ann Li’s storyline. Sabalenka’s pursuit of a fourth Wuhan title ended on Wednesday. Li’s victory over Tjen ensures the player responsible remains central to the tournament.
The Pegula upset has become an Ostapenko run. Saving three match points against Pegula was extraordinary. Defeating Fernandez afterward gives that victory a continuation.
Sonay Kartal has emerged as a contender to watch. Her consecutive victories over Bencic and Paolini set up another seeded challenge against Svitolina.
The Teenagers storyline has reached its Wuhan conclusion. Pohankova and Jovic both lost in the Round of 16, leaving their longer-term development as the story to follow beyond this event.
Guo Hanyu’s singles escape story has ended. After two demanding victories, the Chinese wildcard fell to Svitolina.
The tournament now moves into a stage where every remaining victory brings a player within one match of the final.
