Wuhan Open 2026 Day 6: Chwalinska Beats Swiatek, Kartal Reaches Final
They arrived in Wuhan with very different tennis stories. Now Maja Chwalinska and Sonay Kartal are one victory away from the title.
Wuhan Open 2026 Day 6 delivered two remarkable semifinals on Saturday, October 17.
Chwalinska defeated former junior doubles partner Iga Swiatek 7–5, 6–1, completing the much-anticipated Polish reunion with a victory that carried her into the final.
Kartal followed her extraordinary run through the draw by defeating Jelena Ostapenko 7–6(9), 7–6(5), surviving two demanding tiebreaks to secure the other championship place.
For Swiatek, the defeat ended her title pursuit, but Wuhan also brought a significant WTA 1000 career milestone.
For Chwalinska and Kartal, one final challenge remains.
Wuhan Open 2026 Day 6: Chwalinska Wins the Polish Reunion
Maja Chwalinska (16) def. Iga Swiatek (7) 7–5, 6–1
Their story began long before either player became a familiar name on the WTA Tour.
Chwalinska and Swiatek represented Poland together as juniors, reaching the 2017 Australian Open girls’ doubles final.
They had also met in professional competition before their partnership at Melbourne Park. Swiatek defeated Chwalinska 6–2, 6–3 at an ITF event in Stockholm in 2016.
But their Wuhan encounter was their first meeting at WTA Tour level.
It also marked the first all-Polish WTA Tour semifinal in the Open Era.
The occasion brought together two careers that had followed dramatically different paths.
Swiatek became a multiple Grand Slam champion and former world No. 1.
Chwalinska’s route was less direct, shaped by setbacks and a gradual climb through professional tennis.
In Wuhan, those paths crossed again.
A Competitive Opening Set
The first set remained close, with Chwalinska eventually taking it 7–5.
According to Reuters, Swiatek took a medical timeout when trailing 6–5 in the opening set and subsequently played with her left thigh bandaged.
The medical interruption formed part of the match’s circumstances, but the available reporting does not establish a diagnosis or how much it affected the final result.
Chwalinska secured the opening set and then took control of the scoreboard in the second.
She completed the victory 7–5, 6–1.
The former junior partners had finally met on one of the WTA Tour’s biggest stages.
This time, it was Chwalinska who advanced.

The Left-Hander’s Journey Continues
Chwalinska’s Wuhan campaign has highlighted the qualities that distinguish her tennis.
Rather than relying entirely on power, she can vary pace, change direction and disrupt rhythm through slices, drop shots and lobs.
Her quarterfinal victory over Maria Sakkari required three sets and considerable resilience.
Against Swiatek, she secured the biggest result of her Wuhan run so far.
The Polish reunion storyline has reached its conclusion.
But Chwalinska’s title pursuit continues.

Kartal Survives Two Tiebreaks Against Ostapenko
Sonay Kartal def. Jelena Ostapenko 7–6(9), 7–6(5)
Sonay Kartal entered the semifinals having already eliminated three seeded opponents.
Belinda Bencic.
Jasmine Paolini.
Elina Svitolina.
Her next challenge was Jelena Ostapenko, whose own Wuhan campaign had included a narrow escape against Jessica Pegula and a three-set victory over Leylah Fernandez.
Neither player gave up a set easily.
The opening set reached a tiebreak that Kartal eventually won 11–9.
The second followed a similarly competitive pattern, with Kartal taking another tiebreak 7–5.
After two sets decided by the smallest margins, the British player emerged with a 7–6(9), 7–6(5) victory.
Her fourth consecutive win against a seeded opponent carried her into the Wuhan final.

Kartal’s Comeback Adds Another Dimension
Kartal’s achievement extends beyond the opponents she has defeated.
The Associated Press reported that she had spent more than six months away from competition because of a back stress fracture.
Her return has now produced a WTA 1000 final appearance.
That background changes the perspective on her Wuhan campaign.
The story is not simply about an unexpected finalist defeating higher-ranked players.
It is also about a player rebuilding her career after a prolonged absence and turning that return into a major opportunity.
Against Chwalinska, Kartal will have the chance to complete the comeback with a title.
Swiatek’s Wuhan Milestone: Every WTA 1000 Semifinal Reached
Iga Swiatek left Wuhan without reaching the final, but her quarterfinal victory over Ann Li had already added another achievement to her career.
By reaching the Wuhan semifinals, Swiatek completed a collection of semifinal appearances across all ten tournaments in the current WTA 1000 calendar.
According to the WTA, she became only the fourth player since the category’s introduction in 2009 to reach the semifinals at every one of those ten events.
The other players to achieve the distinction are Caroline Wozniacki, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Simona Halep.
Swiatek was also the only active player in that group when she completed the milestone.
Her Wuhan appearance marked her 25th career WTA 1000 semifinal.
The achievement deserves recognition independently of Saturday’s result.
Chwalinska won the match.
Swiatek nevertheless left Wuhan having completed another notable career milestone.
The two stories can coexist without diminishing either player’s accomplishment.
Developing Storylines: The Final Two Emerge
The Wuhan semifinals resolved several of the tournament’s major storylines while establishing one final question.
The Polish Reunion — Resolved
Swiatek and Chwalinska’s shared junior history became one of the defining stories of the semifinal stage.
Their first tour-level meeting ended with Chwalinska advancing to the final.
The reunion has been resolved on the scoreboard, while Chwalinska’s title pursuit remains alive.
Kartal’s Seeded-Player Run — Still Developing
Kartal has now defeated four seeded opponents during her Wuhan campaign.
Her victories over Bencic, Paolini, Svitolina and Ostapenko have carried her into the championship match.
Her next opponent, Chwalinska, brings a different playing style and a different route to the final.
Ostapenko’s Survival Story — Resolved
Ostapenko’s earlier victories over Pegula, Fernandez and Shnaider had transformed her tournament into a story of repeated survival.
Kartal ended that run in the semifinals.
The Latvian’s campaign closes with a semifinal appearance rather than a title opportunity.
Sabalenka’s Fourth Wuhan Title Bid — Resolved
Aryna Sabalenka’s pursuit of a fourth Wuhan title ended earlier in the tournament against Ann Li.
Li subsequently fell to Swiatek in the quarterfinals.
Neither player reached the final.
The tournament will crown a champion from a different part of the original title conversation.
