Ningbo Open 2026 Day 2: Diana Shnaider Survives to Set Up Alex Eala
Five set points saved. Seven consecutive games won. A leading contender withdrawn before playing.
Ningbo Open 2026 Day 2 delivered three very different reminders of how quickly a tournament draw can change.
Diana Shnaider survived two difficult sets against Yulia Putintseva to secure a first WTA Tour meeting with Alex Eala. Jasmine Paolini recovered from 0–5 in the second set against Anhelina Kalinina to earn a meeting with teenager Iva Jovic. Meanwhile, second seed Iga Świątek withdrew, ending one of the potential semifinal storylines identified before the tournament.
By the end of Tuesday, October 20, all seven scheduled women’s singles matches were complete and the entire Round-of-16 field was settled.
The original Ningbo Story Seeds are no longer just possibilities. Some have developed into confirmed matchups. Others have already reached their conclusions.
Ningbo Open 2026 Day 2: Diana Shnaider Saves Five Set Points
Diana Shnaider [6] defeated Yulia Putintseva [Q] 7–5, 7–6(4).
The straight-sets score only tells part of the story.
Shnaider trailed 2–5 in the opening set and had to save three set points before recovering to take it 7–5.
The second set presented another challenge. Down 3–5, she saved two more set points before forcing a tiebreak and completing the victory.
Five set points saved across two sets.
Shnaider had survived the kind of contest that could have ended her Ningbo campaign before it properly began.
And her reward is a meeting with Alex Eala.
Watch Putintseva vs Shnaider highlights:
Two Left-Handers, Two Different Opening Victories
Alex Eala arrived in the second round after defeating Diane Parry 6–3, 6–1 on Monday, ending a three-match WTA Tour losing streak.
Shnaider advanced through a very different contest, recovering from repeated deficits against Putintseva.
Now the two left-handers will meet for the first time on the WTA Tour, with a quarterfinal place at stake.
For Eala, this is the second obstacle on the Redemption Road we identified before the tournament.
For Shnaider, it is another opportunity to build on a victory earned under pressure.
Neither opening-round result determines what happens next.
But together, they have created one of Ningbo’s most intriguing Round-of-16 matchups.
Jasmine Paolini Wins Seven Straight Games to Reach Iva Jovic
Jasmine Paolini defeated Anhelina Kalinina [LL] 6–2, 7–5.
Paolini appeared to be heading toward a deciding set when she fell behind 0–5 in the second.
Instead, she won seven consecutive games.
What began as a comfortable opening set became one of the day’s most remarkable recoveries.
Paolini turned a five-game deficit into a straight-sets victory, denying Kalinina the opportunity to extend the contest.
Her next opponent is fourth seed Iva Jovic.
Watch Paolini vs Kalinina highlights:
A New Test for the Teenagers Storyline
Jovic entered the main draw with a first-round bye.
Paolini’s victory confirms the opponent awaiting her in the Round of 16.
For our Teenagers storyline, this is the first significant test of Jovic’s Ningbo campaign.
Paolini has already demonstrated her ability to recover when a match appears to be slipping away.
Jovic must now begin her tournament against an opponent arriving from precisely that kind of victory.
The result will also determine one half of a possible quarterfinal involving Eala or Shnaider.
For now, both matches remain separate challenges. Any quarterfinal combination is still conditional.
Iga Świątek Withdraws as the Lower Half Changes
The most consequential development away from the court was the withdrawal of second seed Iga Świątek.
Świątek withdrew because of a thigh injury, leaving the lower half of the draw without one of its leading contenders.
Lucky loser Anastasia Zakharova takes her place opposite Marie Bouzková.
Bouzková does not advance automatically. She must still play her Round-of-16 match against Zakharova.
A Story Seed Ends Before the Match
Before the tournament, we identified the possibility of a semifinal involving Świątek and Marta Kostyuk.
That matchup can no longer happen.
Kostyuk remains in the competition and will face Ekaterina Alexandrova in the Round of 16.
Świątek’s withdrawal is not a match defeat, but it has significantly changed the tournament’s potential paths.
Sometimes a Story Seed ends without a ball being struck.
Ekaterina Alexandrova Ends Guo Hanyu’s Home Campaign
Ekaterina Alexandrova defeated Guo Hanyu [WC] 6–2, 6–3.
Guo entered Ningbo with a wildcard and an opportunity to extend the storyline she had developed during the Asian swing.
Alexandrova, a finalist at Ningbo in 2025, ended that campaign in straight sets.
For Guo, the home-tournament challenge is over.
For Alexandrova, the victory establishes another significant assignment: a Round-of-16 meeting with third seed Marta Kostyuk.
The match also closes one of our original pre-tournament Story Seeds while opening a new chapter for Alexandrova.
Belinda Bencic Advances After Jelena Ostapenko Retires
Belinda Bencic [5] advanced against Jelena Ostapenko, 6–3, 1–1 RET.
Bencic won the opening set before Ostapenko retired with the second set level at 1–1.
The result sends Bencic into the Round of 16, but the encounter ended before the players could complete their contest.
No specific medical cause for Ostapenko’s retirement was confirmed in our research.
Bencic will next face qualifier Katarzyna Kawa, who completed a comeback of her own later in the day’s program.
Katarzyna Kawa Comes Back to Complete the Round of 16
Katarzyna Kawa [Q] defeated Daria Snigur [LL] 1–6, 6–2, 6–4.
Kawa lost the opening set convincingly but recovered to win the next two.
After taking the second set 6–2, she completed the turnaround 6–4 in the decider.
The result settled the final outstanding first-round match and completed the Round-of-16 lineup.
Kawa’s next opponent is fifth seed Belinda Bencic.
For the qualifier, another difficult assignment awaits.
Polina Kudermetova and Sara Bejlek Advance
Two additional results helped complete the next stage of the draw.
Polina Kudermetova Earns the Rybakina Challenge
Polina Kudermetova [Q] defeated Cristina Bucșa [WC] 7–6(5), 6–2.
Kudermetova won a closely contested opening-set tiebreak before taking the second set more comfortably.
She now faces top seed and defending champion Elena Rybakina.
Rybakina’s title defense has yet to begin on court, but her opening opponent is confirmed.
Sara Bejlek Sets Up Sorana Cîrstea Meeting
Sara Bejlek defeated Alycia Parks [LL] 4–6, 6–3, 6–3.
Bejlek recovered after dropping the first set, winning the next two to reach the Round of 16.
Her next opponent is eighth seed Sorana Cîrstea, who defeated Han Shi on Day 1.
Another qualifier’s path has ended, while Bejlek’s Ningbo campaign continues.
