Toray Pan Pacific Open 2026 Day 3: Eala Roars Back to Set Shnaider Rematch

 October 28, 2026

The Toray Pan Pacific Open 2026 Day 3 delivered four dramatic three-set encounters as Tokyo’s first quarterfinalists emerged on Wednesday, October 28.

Alexandra Eala produced a remarkable comeback against Talia Gibson, recovering from a set down to win 4–6, 6–2, 6–0. Her victory secured a quarterfinal rematch with Diana Shnaider, who also survived a three-set battle against Aliaksandra Sasnovich.

Elsewhere, lucky loser Kamilla Rakhimova transformed her unexpected main-draw opportunity into a quarterfinal appearance, while Australian qualifier Maya Joint continued her impressive tournament run.

With two quarterfinal matchups confirmed and four Round of 16 matches remaining, Tokyo’s championship picture is beginning to take shape.

Alexandra Eala Turns the Match Around With a 6–0 Finish

For Alexandra Eala, the road to the Tokyo quarterfinals was anything but straightforward.

Facing Australia’s Talia Gibson in the Round of 16, the eighth seed found herself trailing after losing the opening set 4–6.

Gibson had arrived with momentum after defeating Daria Kasatkina 6–0, 7–5 in the first round.

And for much of the opening set, she looked capable of extending that run.

The first seven games went with serve before Gibson broke for a 5–3 lead.

Eala responded immediately, breaking Gibson to love as the Australian served for the set.

But Gibson broke again to claim the opener 6–4.

Eala had fought back once.

Now she needed something more.

The Turning Point

Eala began the second set by breaking Gibson’s serve.

She then saved a break point to consolidate her advantage at 2–0.

Although Gibson remained competitive, Eala gradually strengthened her position.

From 3–2 in the second set, the Filipino won nine consecutive games.

Three to finish the second set.

Six more to complete the deciding set.

Final score: Alexandra Eala def. Talia Gibson 4–6, 6–2, 6–0.

The match lasted one hour and 54 minutes.

The Numbers Behind Eala’s Comeback

The official match statistics reveal how Eala’s performance improved as the contest progressed.

Eala’s return performance was particularly important.

She won 33% of return points in the opening set, 48% in the second, and 71% in the decider.

She also saved every break point she faced after the first set.

In the deciding set, Eala converted all three of her break opportunities.

But the final 6–0 score did not mean Gibson stopped fighting.

The Australian created two break points in the final game.

Eala saved both.

Gibson also won a 24-shot rally on Eala’s first match point before the Filipino eventually closed out the victory with a service winner.

The result was a commanding finish to a match that had begun with Eala under pressure.

And it secured something even more intriguing.

Another meeting with Diana Shnaider.

Diana Shnaider Wins to Confirm the Ningbo Rematch

Diana Shnaider also needed three sets to reach the Tokyo quarterfinals.

The third seed defeated qualifier Aliaksandra Sasnovich 6–3, 5–7, 6–3 in two hours and 31 minutes.

Shnaider took the opening set, but Sasnovich responded by winning the second.

In the deciding set, Shnaider converted three of seven break opportunities to regain control.

Her victory confirmed the quarterfinal matchup that had remained only a possibility during Tokyo’s opening two days.

Alexandra Eala vs. Diana Shnaider.

From Ningbo to Tokyo

Their previous professional meeting took place on October 22 at the Ningbo Open.

Shnaider defeated Eala 7–5, 6–4 in the Round of 16.

Now, just over a week later, the two will meet again.

Their professional head-to-head stands at:

SHNAIDER 1 — 0 EALA

There is also an earlier chapter in their tennis history.

Eala defeated Shnaider 6–1, 6–3 in a junior tournament in Osaka in 2019.

That result belongs to their junior careers and does not count toward their professional head-to-head.

Their upcoming Tokyo quarterfinal will therefore be their second established professional encounter.

Different Routes, Same Destination

Eala has won two matches in Tokyo.

She defeated Mika Stojsavljevic 6–1, 6–2 before recovering to beat Gibson.

Shnaider received a first-round bye and then overcame Sasnovich in three sets.

Both have earned their quarterfinal places.

And both now know exactly who stands between them and the semifinals.

The Ningbo result gives the matchup a compelling recent history.

Tokyo provides the next chapter.

Kamilla Rakhimova Turns Her Second Chance Into a Quarterfinal

On Tuesday, Kamilla Rakhimova was one of Tokyo’s two lucky losers who inherited first-round byes.

On Wednesday, she became a quarterfinalist.

The Uzbek player defeated Ekaterina Alexandrova 6–4, 4–6, 7–6(5) in a match lasting two hours and 51 minutes.

It was the longest of Wednesday’s four singles encounters.

And it completed a remarkable turnaround in Rakhimova’s tournament.

She had originally lost to Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the final round of qualifying.

But Belinda Bencic’s withdrawal created an opening in the main draw.

Rakhimova entered as a lucky loser and inherited the vacant position’s first-round bye.

Her victory over Alexandrova was therefore her first main-draw win in Tokyo.

A Deciding-Set Battle

Rakhimova won the opening set 6–4 before Alexandrova responded by taking the second 6–4.

The deciding set became a closely contested struggle.

Both players broke serve three times before the match reached a tiebreak.

Rakhimova eventually prevailed 7–5 in the breaker.

The victory transformed her second chance into a place among the tournament’s final eight.

But another challenge awaits.

Her quarterfinal opponent is Maya Joint.

Maya Joint Continues Her Qualifying Run

Maya Joint’s Tokyo journey began in qualifying.

Four victories later, she is a quarterfinalist.

The Australian defeated Cristina Bucsa 6–1, 2–6, 6–4 on Wednesday, recovering from a difficult second set to advance.

Joint had already defeated Viktorija Golubic and Mai Hontama in qualifying.

She then eliminated sixth seed Sorana Cirstea in Tuesday’s opening round.

Against Bucsa, Joint started strongly, taking the first set 6–1.

Bucsa responded by winning the second 6–2.

But Joint regained the advantage in the decider, winning it 6–4.

Her quarterfinal against Rakhimova now brings together two players who entered Tokyo through different routes.

Joint: Two qualifying victories followed by two main-draw wins.

Rakhimova: One qualifying victory, a qualifying-final defeat, a lucky-loser entry, an inherited bye, and a main-draw victory.

Both have reached the same destination.

Only one will advance to the semifinals.

The Bigger Picture

The withdrawals that reshaped the opening draw created a second opportunity for Kamilla Rakhimova.

She turned that opportunity into a quarterfinal place.

Maya Joint has continued winning since qualifying.

Diana Shnaider survived a three-set challenge to advance.

And Alexandra Eala transformed a one-set deficit into a nine-game winning streak.

Now two quarterfinals are confirmed.

For Eala, the next opponent is familiar.

For Shnaider, the challenger has returned.

Ningbo was their first professional chapter. Tokyo will be the next.
